Enhancing Learner Assessment with ChatGPT: Practical Activities for Engaging Evaluation

Marwa Seif (Egypt)

Abstract

In recent years, the advancement of natural language processing technologies has opened up new possibilities for learner assessment in the field of education. In this presentation, the speaker will introduce participants to the concept of ChatGPT, its potential in learner assessment, various practical activities that utilize ChatGPT for assessing learners’ understanding and knowledge and three activities based on conversation designed to engage participants in utilizing ChatGPT for learner assessment.

Firstly, an interactive quiz game allows participants to assess learners’ knowledge and understanding of specific subjects. Through adaptive questioning and personalized feedback, ChatGPT adapts the difficulty level based on learner responses, creating an engaging and tailored assessment experience.

The second activity focuses on virtual conversations and role-playing scenarios, where participants simulate conversations to assess learners’ communication skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. ChatGPT serves as a conversational partner, providing realistic responses and enabling participants to evaluate learners’ performance in a dynamic and interactive manner.

Thirdly, language proficiency assessment and feedback are addressed through interactive conversations with ChatGPT. Participants engage in chat-based conversations to evaluate learners’ language proficiency and receive targeted feedback. This activity allows teachers to assess learners’ speaking skills, grammar usage, vocabulary acquisition, and fluency.

In short, the session emphasizes the importance of interactive and adaptive assessment activities, as they promote learner engagement, personalized feedback, and meaningful evaluation. Through these practical activities, teachers gain valuable insights into leveraging ChatGPT as an effective tool for learner assessment, harnessing its natural language processing capabilities to provide dynamic and immersive assessment experiences.
