Abstract:

In this engaging presentation, we will delve into the innovative ways in which Duolingo harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) to elevate the language learning experience and provide users worldwide with an immersive and effective learning journey. While Duolingo has a rich history of utilizing AI to personalize content, we will explore its recent venture into the realm of generative AI, which has further enriched the language learning process.

Our discussion will be divided into two key segments:

1. Content Generation: Gain insights into how Duolingo leverages large language models to craft educational content that adheres to stringent quality standards, ensuring a top-tier learning experience for all.
2. Generative AI Initiatives: Discover Duolingo’s groundbreaking features, including the Roleplay experience and the Explain My Answer feature. Roleplay immerses users in language learning by enabling interactions with chatbots based on Duolingo’s World Characters, fostering dynamic responses in Spanish and French. The Explain My Answer feature offers instant grammar explanations and error feedback, empowering users to enhance their language skills.

Presenter Bio:

Guiding us through this enlightening journey is Parker Henry, a Learning Designer at Duolingo who leads AI initiatives within the Learning & Curriculum function. Parker brings a wealth of experience to the table, having worked extensively on generating learning content with Large Language Models for in-app exercises and the Duolingo Max experience.

Before his role in AI, Parker contributed to English course content tailored for Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese speakers. Additionally, he played a pivotal role as the Learning & Curriculum representative for the Duolingo for Schools product, allowing educators to integrate Duolingo content into their classrooms.

Prior to joining Duolingo, Parker pursued his passion for language and education by teaching 6th through 8th-grade ESL in the Czech Republic and his hometown of Memphis, TN. His academic journey includes degrees from Indiana University in Linguistics, International Studies, and Music Theory.
