Guided Walking Tour (own cost)
After the conference concludes, an optional “walking and talking” tour through the center of the metropolis is planned. This tour presents a wonderful opportunity to experience the dynamic blend of ancient and modern Athens firsthand. Lasting approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, it promises an engaging exploration of the city’s diverse history and culture.
The tour begins at Hotel Titania, where we’ll set out on a leisurely stroll along Panepistimiou Street. Along the way, we’ll admire the majestic 19th-century Neoclassical buildings, including landmarks like the National Library, the National University, and the Academy of Arts and Letters. We’ll also make stops at the Catholic Church, the Numismatic Museum, and catch a glimpse of the Parliament building, once a regal palace.
Descending into the Metro Station, we’ll have the chance to explore a captivating exhibition featuring archaeological discoveries unearthed during the construction of the Athens Metro. If time allows, we’ll witness the ceremonial changing of the National Guards, the Evzones, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Our route will lead us past the Russian Orthodox Church and the Anglican Church before reaching the tranquil setting of the National Gardens. Here, we’ll admire the busts of three prominent playwrights from Ancient Greece and enjoy distant views of the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch.
Continuing our journey, we’ll wander through the charming streets towards Monastiraki, where we’ll immerse ourselves in the vibrant ambiance of the historic Plaka area. This neighborhood, once the bustling hub of the ancient Agora, offers a glimpse into Athens’ past, with its Byzantine churches and lively marketplace.
While our time together may not permit us to visit every historical monument, our tour will provide insights into key landmarks such as the Acropolis Hill, the Parthenon, and the Erechtheion. Throughout the tour, our knowledgeable guide will be available to answer any questions you may have about our itinerary.
Join us as we embark on a journey through the ages, where each step unveils a new facet of Athens’ remarkable history and heritage.
Participants are reminded to bring water and wear comfortable shoes for the tour’s duration. We look forward to exploring Athens’ history and culture with you.
